In Torbay League Division 1, South Hams narrowly lost 2 ½ – 1½ at Newton Abbot. After a win for Steve Levy, a defeat for David Archer and a draw for James Schofield, the result hinged on Ben Wilkinson’s exciting and close game, which Ben lost to a neat tactic by his opponent.

In Division 4, South Hams won 3 – 1 away at Teignmouth, with wins for Roy Greenhalgh, Ken Ashby and Alan Davies; Teignmouth’s point came from the fact that the fourth South Hams player was unable to attend at short notice.

In the Devon County Chess Association Saturday Mamhead League, South Hams hosted in Exmouth a match which featured four exciting games, South Hams eventually lost 2½ – 1½, with a win for Steve Levy, a draw for David Archer, and defeats for Ben Wilkinson and Phil McConnell.

In the Homan League, Phil McConnell beat Alan Davies, but lost to James Schofield; David Archer beat Ken Ashby, and Alan Davies beat Chris Willcox.

In the Dunleavy League James Fowler and Roy Greenhalgh fought out a draw, and Barry Sweetman beat Tony Collins. In a battle between two juniors, Noah Farrand beat Oliver Zaffiro. Richard Thomas pulled off a good draw against Dennis Russell, and Jim Savage beat Tony Collins.

In the Knockout Cup, Ken Ashby won a tight encounter with Chris Willcox, and will play either Ben Wilkinson or Phil McConnell in the semi-finals. Steve Levy beat James Fowler, and will play wither David Archer or James Schofield in the semi-finals.
