A busy week of chess this week. Member Cliff Peach was on international duty at the World Amateur Chess Championships in Crete. Playing the creme of his division from across Europe he scored a respectable 4 out of 9 in the tough E-section, only losing 1 game. His friend and fellow Devon Chess player Tony Tatum played in the F-section and had a fantastic tournament. After an impressive score of 8 out of 9 he was crowned World Champion! Congratulations to Tony Tatum for putting Devon firmly on the European map.
Back at home there were some tough Torbay Chess League fixtures to navigate. On Thur 24th the South Hams Division 1 team travelled away to take on the might of Newton Abbott's 'A' team. Steve Levy (187) lost to Stephen Homer (186), Dennis Cowley (183) drew against Paul Brooks (163), Steve Dickinson (160) also drew against Trefor Thynne (158) and James Schofield (148) won his game against Danilo Gouveia Wasques (130). They came away with a respectable 2-2 draw on the night. A good result. The Division 3 team were also in action on the 24th. This time at home against Teignmouth. Ben Wilkinson (141) came out on top against Ian Henry (125), Alan Davies (106) navigated some sharp tactics to prevail against Charles Doidge (122), Roy Greenhalgh (104) beat Raymond Chubb (90) and Trevor Hurt (96) persevered against Dorothy Dawson (25). This meant a 4-0 victory.
In the M-Wray Shield Tony Collins (60) had a nice win against Barry Sweetman (67), and in The Homan League James Fowler (106) triumphed over Richard Thomas (70). This weeks 'Giant Killer' award though has to go to Phil McConnell (118) who played a fantastic game to subdue David Archer (166) and get revenge for the loss the week before.
