South Hams Chess Club’s online Homan League continues to be very busy with plenty of games being played weekly, springing up surprise results and the top of the league also changing weekly. Phil McConnell is now leading the pack after his much looked forward to game against Tony Tatam ended drawn. Another worthy result of note was James Fowler drawing against James Schofield. This game finished abruptly and mysteriously, a trade mark of James Fowler, but the result takes him to the top half of the league.
Other results saw Tony Tatam beat Arthur Doble, David Archer also won against Arthur, but then Arthur got a great result beating Alan Davies; Richard Thomas beat Ken Ashby, Phil McConnell beat Trevor Hurt and finally Clifford Peach drew with new club member Quentin Thwaites who remains unbeaten after four games.
The Homan League is looking very different from what would be expected in over the board games which is creating great interest throughout the club. The playing strength of the bottom players is not far different from the top places, which makes every game full of interest to all the fourteen players involved.
Away from club games Tony Tatam and Clifford Peach have been playing in other tournaments. At the weekend they took part in the Witney Chess Club’s Congress with over 130 entries from players around the country. Tony Tatam won his section with a great score of 4 ½ / 5 while Clifford in the section above Tony, had a respectable 2 ½ / 5. These two players are also playing in the 4 National Chess Leagues Autumn Congress with games played fortnightly and both players being on ¾. While not playing in club and Congress games they are also playing for Plymouth in team events.
