Press Report 18th December 2020

In a rush to complete the first half of the season at the South Hams Chess Club a total of fourteen online games have been played in the last week with some surprising results. It has seen new member Quentin Thwaites beat two of the clubs top players; James Schofield, his first loss of the season, and David Archer. While also adding Arthur Doble as another scalp and drawing against Tony Tatam, this has seen Quentin rise up the league table himself, to put him firmly in the top half of the table.

Steve Levy who is now the only unbeaten player in the league, has now confirmed his place at the top with two wins against Clifford Peach and Chris Willcox. Other results have seen Phil McConnell beat Arthur Doble and Tony Tatam drawing against Alan Davies.

It has been a fantastically hard fought first half of the Homan League, with the top two players securing their place in the end of season Club Champion play off places. The second half of the season will see the same league format with club members playing for the 3rd and 4th spots in the play-off final. Also alongside playing in the club’s knockout ‘the Cookworthy Cup’, so plenty of games to keep everyone interested.

Another offshoot away from internal online games saw Trevor Hurt become Champion of the Devon County Chess Association when he won the final of his section, a great achievement for him and by all accounts some exciting and dynamic play.
