South Hams Chess Club

Press Report 31st December 2020

At the end of a great first half of the season, the online South Hams Chess Club scrambled to get all their games played before the Christmas break. In total over 160 games were played with some outstanding performances and surprise results on a weekly basis.

James Schofield and Steve Levy finished in the top two places so thereby qualifying for the Club Championship play offs to be played in May 2021. They will be joined by two other as yet unknown contenders who will make up the 3rd and 4th places in the 4 player semi-finals. So competition will be fierce leading up to May fighting for these other two spots with so many surprise results already played there are no clear cut favourites. Trevor Hurt had outstanding results surprising everyone and finishing 5th in the Homan League with new member Quentin Thwaites 6th. The bottom half of the league also had names expecting to have done better Clifford Peach, Chris Willcox and James Fowler. Yes, online chess is a different game to over the board. It does lack the tension but delivers the results that keeps everyone buzzing with excitement and wondering whose going to fall next.
