South Hams Chess Club

Press Report 12th February 2021

The online South Hams Chess Club continues with a busy weekly bunch of club games, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, always having a full fixture of matches the Homan League is now beginning to take shape. With Steve Levy looking unbeatable on 8 points from 8 games played, he is closely followed by Chris Willcox with an impressive 8/9, starting as a rank outsider in the club championship stakes. It’s looking very much like he could make the four player finals at the end of the season, but it’s far from over yet. He’s being chased by Phil McConnell and a little further back are David Archer and Arthur Doble, with Steve Levy already qualified. Two of the other players have it all to play for.

The best result of the past week has been Alan Davies beating Ken Ashby ending a run of poor results for Alan who is considered a very solid player within club circles. In a top of the league clash Chris Willcox beat Phil McConnell which in effect meant two points for the winner.

The Cookworthy Cup has also seen action with Steve Levy beating James Schofield, who now plays David Archer in the quarter final; with the other quarter final being between Chris Willcox and Quentin Thwaites, but already having reached the semi-final are Alan Davies and Tony Tatam. Away from South Hams Club games both Tony Tatam and Clifford Peach are playing for Plymouth and also 4NCL congresses, while Trevor Hurt is active in Devon County Chess Association tournaments, so all are keeping the club’s flag flying.
