South Hams Chess Club

Press Report 26th March 2021

On a weekly basis high game activity continues at the online South Hams Chess Club. Over the last week two players have made a big move to qualify for the four player club championship play off places. David Archer returned to Homan League matches with two wins against Tony Tatam and James Fowler. This followed his Cookworthy Cup win against Steve Levy, inflicting Steve’s first loss of 2021. At the same time Phil McConnell is showing impressive form beating Trevor Hurt and breaking down Clifford Peach’s defence to really boost his chances of making the play offs.

Also, standing in their way is Chris Willcox, far from out of the race he beat Alan Davies. It really looks a three horse race between these players, but David does have ground to make up being behind with games played. Not one of those games can be counted as points in the bag as anyone of the players he has yet to play are capable of causing upsets, especially with games being online.

Another player with two wins under his belt in the last week is Quentin Thwaites who won against Trevor Hurt and Arthur Doble. This loss really put a finish to Arthur’s challenge for a top spot after also losing to James Schofield a few days earlier. Steve Levy continued his winning ways in beating James Fowler giving him 16 points from 16 games in the Homan League, but we have found out he can be beaten.

In games away from the club, after a poor start Clifford Peach drew in the 4 National Chess Leagues fortnightly Congress. Next up sees Tony Tatam and Clifford Peach playing for Plymouth Chess Club in the 4 National Chess League’s team event against a strong Deaf England team.

So everyone at the club is busy, but anyone wanting further information about the club or wanting to play please check out southhamschessclub.com
