South Hams Chess Club

Press Report 1st October 2021

Over the board Chess returned to the South Hams Chess Club at the Regal last Thursday. Although the number of playing members was small, it was a trial start and it provided one of the most exciting games - James Fowler against Trevor Hurt. The game went beyond 70 moves and was by far the last game to finish. It had everything on and off the board; Bobby Fischer days had really returned to the South Hams Chess Club for the evening! In a very hard fought game, victory went to James Fowler which now sees him facing Steve Levy in the 2nd round of the Cookworthy Cup. Steve beat Alan Davies, with Alan playing his favourite London System which took a while for Steve to break down, this game being played online.

The other online Cookworthy Cup game saw David Archer beat Ben Wilkinson, with Ben making a welcome return to the club.

The first draw of the season happened at the Regal in the match between Tony Tatam and Arthur Doble. The replay will also be played at the Regal, these two evenly matched players could see it go on for a few more games yet.

Three other players also showed up at the Regal for over the board chess, Roy Greenhalgh, Clifford Peach and new player Eugene Bellard, between them they played a combination of friendlies in which every game was drawn.

Anyone wanting further information about the club please check out the club’s website at www.southhamschessclub.com or ring Phil McConnell on 01803 834135 or Clifford Peach 01752 407757.
