Press Report 19th November 2021

The South Hams Chess Club got their Torbay Chess League fixtures under way with a home match against Teignmouth. With it being the first Torbay League game for two seasons, it was obviously an interesting time. It was a great start for the South Hams who came out on top 3-1 winners with David Archer, Ben Wilkinson and James Schofield getting the points and Bill Ingham winning the point for Teignmouth. This was against Steve Levy who suffered his second loss of the season after being humbled earlier in the week by Phil McConnell! In the club’s Homan League this ended Steve’s run of eleven straight wins. Phil is making a big impact this season lying in second place, only one point behind Steve.

Other results from the Homan were Tony Tatam drawing against Alan Davies and Clifford Peach, but suffering a defeat against James Fowler; Alan Davies beat Ken Ashby while Clifford lost a long hard fought game against Steve Levy. Chris Willcox who has seen his wheels come off in recent times, lost to David Archer. This means David is third in the Homan. Richard Thomas drew with Arthur Doble - this game being played over the board and Arthur also beating Trevor Hurt, whose kamikaze style of play just didn’t come off in that game, but it did against Ken Ashby with a win and finally James Schofield beat James Fowler.

The next Torbay League fixture is against Torquay Boys Grammar School, with the team selected being Trevor Hurt, (match Captain) Tony Tatam, Arthur Doble and Roy Greenhalgh.
