Yes, it was unusual. He shouldn't have lost it. Blocking the check with the knight was a horrendous blunder. Had he blocked it with the bishop instead, contrary to what the commentators mused at the time, the game would have ended in a draw. The commentators reckoned it was impossible for Carlsen to save the game, but actually he could. See if you can work out how; it's a gem. Anyway, his intention of queening was merely to sac it in saving the game. However, the blunder turned everything on its head and ultimately as good as gave him the World Championship. Anand was never going to win 3 games on the trot against him. Indeed, Carlsen gained the half-point required in game 10.
