Nice one Ben. Ah now I see why you also put up your 2014 Master performance against James. Silly me thought you must have played him in the morning! Now, watching this game, it seems to me white's superior pawn structure had given you the edge throughout this nail-biting struggle; particularly after the advance of the pawn to c4 on move 20 nullifies your opponent's b4 rook potential.
Well done for keeping your nerve against an opponent who, after all, has God on his side. Yes, perhaps there was a miscalculation here and there, but that's completely understandable given the time pressure. Wish I'd have been there to see the Desperate Dan sweatbead (or two) dropping from your brow in the latter stages of the game. Excellent triumph.

Great play, Ben - under considerable time pressure (both players had about 3 minutes to play moves 30 to 35). In considering White's move 23, Shredder rates White's position as +2.52 after 23. Ne4, or +1.74 after 23. Nxg6 - which goes to show that Ben has more "balls" than Shredder! On move 24, Shredder would have played Nxf7 (+1.53), rather than Nxg6 (-0.01), confirming the "balls" point.

Black's position fell apart after 28. ... Qc7 (he should have protected the knight with Qd8). I can see why Ben's heart would have missed a beat after 32. ... Qa1+, but nobody present would have guessed this from the instant and emphatic way he moved his rook back to e1.

An exciting win, crucial for the match result.
