How to Resume a Game on chess.com
In the event that there is a connection failure, or an outage of the chess.com server, while a standardplay game is being played online, and either player wishes to continue the game subsequently, then the game can be resumed by adopting the following procedure.
- If possible, as soon as the connection failure occurs, both players take a photograph or screenshot showing the position and the status of both clocks.
- When both players are ready to resume, one of the players captures the FEN ("Forsyth–Edwards Notation") of the game position. You can do this by loading up the game on chess.com, clicking the download icon, selecting the contents of the FEN box, and doing a copy (CTRL+c for Windows or CMD+c for Mac).
- Within chess.com, he then goes to Play -> Daily Chess (NOT Live Chess), and clicks the "Play" button under "New Game".
- Choose "Custom Game", and for "Setup" select the dropdown "Custom FEN". Paste (CTRL+V or CMD+v) into the box labelled "Enter Custom FEN".
- Choose time controls with the clocks initially set to the time that was remaining for the player who had the more time left at the point of the connection failure. As usual, select 30 seconds for the increment.
- Select the name of your opponent - instead of "vs Random" enter the chess.com username of your opponent.
- Select colours to be the same as before the connection failure.
- Start playing the game. The player who had less time on his clock when the connection failed should wait before making his next move until his clock has counted down to the time he had remaining when the connection failed.
