Wrap-up of the 2017-18 Season
Another very enjoyable season comes to an end.
Many congratulations to Steve Levy, who is once again winner of the Homan League (with a 100% record since the turn of the year) and is therefore our Club Champion once again. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th places were taken by David Archer, James Schofield and Phil McConnell respectivly. The players finishing 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th in the Homan will be relegated to the Dunleavy League at the start of the 2018-19 season: Ben Wilkinson, Alan Davies, Chris Willcox and Ken Ashby respectively.
To rub salt into the wounds, Steve Levy also won the Cookworthy Cup. The finalists, Steve and Ben Wilkinson, agreed to settle the two-headed final with a pair of Rapidplay games on the 14th June. Two good games - but both times Ben erred under time pressure right at the end.
In the Dunleavy League, James Fowler finished top with a very impressive 13 points out of 15. He gets promoted to the Homan League for the start of the 2018-19 season, along with John Belli (2nd), Trevor Hurt (3rd) and Richard Thomas (4th).
Torbay Chess League
In the Torbay Chess League, South Hams had another good season, with the club competing in all six competitions. Click on a competiton name in the table for full details.
Two South Hams players were awarded "Player of the Year" trophies: Phil Mcconnell won the Division 2 award, and Ben Wilkinson was co-winner of the Division 3 award. The prizes were presented at the Torbay Chess League AGM (held on 7th June at the South Hams club venue) - click here for photographs.
DCCA Mamhead Challenge Cup
In a field of 6 teams, South Hams finished 4th with 3 points from 3 matches. These Saturday afternoon matches again proved very popular.
We can now look forward to a summer of more casual chess (the club will remain open over the summer), including a couple of outdoor events in Dartmouth.
