Torbay Chess League Rapidplay Season 2015-16

South Hams Chess Club fields a team in the Rapidplay Competition of the Torbay Chess League.  Games played in this competition are submitted to the ECF Rapidplay grading database.

In this competition, each team consists of four players, with a maximum rapidplay team grade of Under 560. Each player plays the same opponent twice - once as white, and once as black. The away team has white on the odd-numbered boards for the first set of games, and colours are swapped for the second set of games. Digital clocks are used; the rate of play is all moves in 25 minutes with 10 seconds increment added per move from the beginning.

Match Report

South Hams played their second fixture of the 2015/16 rapidplay season on home turf against Newton Abbot.. Buoyed by recent success, the trio of Levy, Wilkinson and Archer were spoiling for a fight, ably backed up by Tony Collins on board 4.

First blood was spilt by Ben Wilkinson, as his opponent over-looked a back rank mate, and was forced to give up a piece in a lost endgame. The not so gallant David Archer added to the score at the expense Nandaja Narayanan. Newton Abbot fought back through the ever improving Joshua Blackmore who over powered Tony in a Rook and Knight endgame. The top board clash ended drawn, with Steven admitting that perhaps he’d let his position slip, and his opponent off the hook.

The second half of the evening continued in the same vein, with David Archer once again showing no respect for the fairer sex, and destroying his opponent with an overwhelming attack. Ben added a further point after his opponent self-destructed after a knight sac. failed to yield counter-play. Tony’s resistance didn’t quite stave off Joshua’s attack on board 4, leaving a match score of 4.5 -2.5 with the top board remaining. Steve completed the victory with panache, as he strangled the Andrew Kinder’s position, removing any possible counter play and putting the final nail in the coffin by trapping his opponents queen.

Overall, a successful and thoroughly enjoyable evening.

When Tony Tatam utters the words “we can’t field a strong team for this match”, you know things will be tough!

On paper we were the stronger side, but Plymouth had a very strong middle order.

In the first games, Steven outplayed Rob Wilby to put South Hams on the scoresheet, however Martin Quinn soon leveled the match with a similarly impressive performance against Roy Greenhalgh. David Archer appeared to have the better of the position against Nick Hodge, with a strong attack developing from his favoured Dutch Defence. Unfortunately he couldn’t convert this to a win, and Plymouth took a 2-1 lead. In the last game Dennis Russell pulled of a Houdini-like endgame, to salvage a point from a lost position. Tony Tatam returning some of the previous generosity offered by South Hams. At the tea break 2-2.

Refreshments were of no benefit to David and Roy, who both duplicated their earlier performances! Steve Levy however, continued his unbeaten rapidplay form, and took the match score to 4-3, with Dennis needing a win for South Hams to draw the match and virtually guarantee the Rapidplay title. In a tense endgame with Tony and Dennis each having Queen, Bishop and 6 pawns, Dennis two minutes up on the clock offered a draw ………
