The South Hams Chess Club’s Torbay League season got off to a disappointing start with a 2 ½ - 1 ½ defeat away to Teignmouth. The South Hams out graded Teignmouth by nearly 40 points. On board one Steve Levy drew against Bill Ingham; while on board 4 Ben Wilkinson beat Charles Doidge, but David Archer and James Schofield both lost on boards 2 and 3.
Thursday was another busy club night with three games played in the Homan League. They didn’t spring any surprises but Steve Levy beat David Archer. Ben Wilkinson caught Roy Greenhalgh having a bad day at the office with an early defeat - falling for a gambit trick in the opening. Chris Wilcox and Clifford Peach played out a 60 move game in which Chris had a superior end game and edging the win.
The Dunleavy League saw Jim Savage having a good week beating Barry Sweetman on the Tuesday and Oliver Zaffiro on Thursday. This is putting Jim as a late runner for promotion. Noah Farrand lost to Ken Ashby, Richard Thomas lost to James Fowler - ( new member Richard is playing well and with a few more games will cause problems for a few top players in the division ). John Belli drew with Barry Sweetman, keeping Barry in the top four; Phil McConnell beat Zac Zaffiro which keeps him top of the Dunleavy and the last game to finish saw Alan Davies draw against James Schofield. Both these players are amongst the favourites to win promotion, but both remain outside the top 4.
