On Sunday 17th January, the annual “Inter-Area Jamboree” organised by the Devon County Chess Association, was held at the Isca Centre, Exeter, with three teams of twelve players representing West Devon, East Devon and South Devon. As usual, the South Hams and Plymouth clubs suspended their normal rivalry to combine forces and represent West Devon. Despite West Devon having won this event for the last 4 years, this year the results did not go so well, and South Devon won convincingly with a score of 7½ out of 12, 2½ points ahead of West Devon.
In Division 1, South Hams beat a strong Torbay team 3 – 1, with wins for David Archer and James Schofield, and draws for Steve Levy and Phil McConnell.
James Fowler maintained his 100% record in the Dunleavy League, with a win over Richard Thomas. In the same competition, Dennis Russell beat Roy Greenhalgh, Tony Collins beat Zak Zaffiro, while Jim Savage fought out a tense draw with John Belli.
In the Homan League, Alan Davies beat Ken Ashby.
In the Knockout Cup, Ben Wilkinson beat Oliver Zaffiro, and will play Phil McConnell in the next round.
In the Devon County Chess Association Individual Competition, Phil McConnell drew with Nicky Bacon (Sidmouth) and is currently leading his pool.
