A very busy online South Hams Chess Club saw fourteen games being played in just under the last two weeks, two have been played over the board at the Regal Club. In one of those Trevor Hurt had a great result against Tony Tatam, forcing a draw with repeat moves. Tony also had a win against Ken Ashby while Trevor lost to Phil McConnell. Phil is having a great season but lost his game against David Archer in what was a top of the Homan League match.
Chris Willcox who has been holding a top three spot for most of the season, saw his wheels come off with losses to Steve Levy and Arthur Doble. Arthur followed this great result with a ding dong battle against Clifford Peach, with Clifford eventually winning a topsy-turvy game. A few days earlier Clifford drew against Ken Ashby. In another ding dong battle Richard Thomas beat Trevor Hurt, who refused a draw offer only to go on and lose.
Quietly climbing the Homan League is James Schofield who has had two wins in the past few weeks, but overall only Steve Levy who is on 9/9 is the clear leader. Ben Wilkinson having played fewer games 4/4 also remains unbeaten.
In the Cookworthy Cup Chris Willcox beat Clifford Peach after a long battle, he now goes on to play Phil McConnell in the semi-final.
On Thursday the 11th November at the Regal Club, 7pm, the South Hams play Newton Abbot in the first Torbay Chess League. This will be the first game played over the board for two seasons, with fingers crossed we await to see if the match goes ahead.
