Eight members of the South Hams Chess Club played in the Torbay Chess Congress last weekend, although Phil McConnell was there as one of the main organisers and controllers. The seven who played all had good results in their sections and two, David Archer and Ken Ashby, actually won money prizes. Other players, James Schofield, Clifford Peach, Alan Davies, Ben Wilkinson and Roy Greenhalgh, all scored well putting the South Hams Chess Club well and truly on the chess map. The playing strength at the club has never been stronger.
In the club’s internal competitions there was just one surprise result when the club’s newest member Richard Thomas had his 2nd win against Barry Sweetman. This result has probably finished Barry’s promotion hopes from the Dunleavy League. In other games Phil McConnell beat Noah Farrand, James Fowler, another promotion hopeful, beat Zac Zaffiro, John Belli beat Tony Collins, Ken Ashby beat Jim Savage while James Schofield beat Alan Davies. In the Homan League Steve Levy won against Clifford Peach and David Archer beat Chris Wilcox.
This Saturday the club plays its first Devon County League match in the Mamhead against Newton Abbot. The team selected are Steve Levy, David Archer, James Schofield and Phil McConnell.
