The club was closed on Thursday 1st March due to the weather, but several Homan League players met in Dartmouth two days previously: Steve Levy won a high-quality game against David Archer, while James Schofield played well to turn round an opening deficit and beat Ben Wilkinson.
The thaw came just in time for South Hams to travel to Teignmouth on 3rd March for a match in the Devon County Chess Association Mamhead Challenge Cup, which South Hams won 2½ – 1½. Steve Levy won a game which he had under control from start to finish. Phil McConnell survived a powerful attack by his opponent to win in the end game. Ben Wilkinson gained an early advantage but lost out in the end. Cliff Peach agreed a draw with his opponent – thus securing the match win for South Hams – in a subtle position which subsequent computer analysis shows could have been won by his opponent!
