The South Hams Chess Club moves into new times when they restart on Thursday 3rd September. Like many other clubs & functions they will be playing on line at www.chess.com, with matches starting at 7pm. This has been made possible by Phil McConnell, the clubs webmaster, who has set up the Homan league and the knockout Cookworthy Cup. Members are truly thankful.
Although not all members will be taking part online, the majority will. Playing online is certainly a different experience which takes a little getting used to. Chess clubs throughout the country have all been affected by the Corona Virus and the social distancing rules, so all will remain closed including congresses. Although some are going online, the South Hams will be re assessing the situation at Christmas. The Regal Club’s playing room will be sorely missed being one of the best playing areas in Devon.
Steve Levy will be hoping to hang on to his Club Champion’s title, although even he admits anything could happen online. Some unexpected results surely will play a part. Tony Tatam, arbiter, will have the final word on any disputes in the club’s games, which we hope will be zero.
Two South Hams players took part in the 4NCL congress this weekend and both finished on 3/5. This was online and both these players will be playing for Plymouth in the 4 National Chess League also online.
