Over the past two weeks South Hams Chess Club has been very busy with many games being played. Phil McConnell is holding on to top spot by just half a point, probably the longest period of time anyone has remained top since the start of the season. He failed to put another point between him and the chasing pack when he lost to Chris Willcox who is in the bottom half of the league. It’s been such an unpredictable online season: online chess is certainly a leveller which adds to the interest.
Other noticeable results have been Steve Levy beating Tony Tatam, David Archer having two wins against Richard Thomas and Clifford Peach and Clifford Peach drawing with Arthur Doble. Arthur had beaten Richard Thomas a few evenings earlier.
New member Quentin Thwaites suffered his first defeat against Trevor Hurt who always comes up with the most unexpected results. This ended a run of six draws by Quentin. A middle of the table clash saw James Fowler draw with Ken Ashby.
In other games away from club matches Tony Tatam and Clifford Peach played for Plymouth in the 4 National Chess League against Enfield; both won their games in a 4-0 win.
Both Clifford and Tony have also been competing in the 4 National Chess Autumn Congress played over a two month period in which players have very respectful results. Tony is on 4 ½ and Clifford 3 ½ points from 6 matches, the last game is being played this week.
