The South Hams Chess Club has been mega busy over the last two weeks, playing 14 internal online Homan League matches. So far three players remain unbeaten - present club champion Steve Levy, this season’s sensation Chris Willcox both on 5 points from 5 games, while Ben Wilkinson is on 3 points from 3 games and sandwiched between these is Phil McConnell having a very impressive season on 4 points from 5.
Saying this both Steve and Chris have had fortune on their side in a couple of games where they were a little lucky to get away with a loss or draw, but fortune favours the brave. Ben Wilkinson has made an impressive return to the club with his 3 wins bringing back his more risky style of play which makes great entertainment.
All other members of the club have had mixed results with wins and losses - Alan Davies, Trevor Hurt, David Archer, Arthur Doble, Tony Tatam and Ken Ashby; while Richard Thomas and Clifford Peach decided to play over the board at home - only to find out after a couple of hours play the clock was set to the wrong timings and the game was null and void, oh well! Trevor Hurt and Ben Wilkinson also played over the board at the club’s home venue The Regal Club with Ben winning in style.
The Chess Club have decided to enter two teams in the Torbay Chess League after 2 seasons of the league not functioning. These games will be over the board and the other teams competing will be Teignmouth, Newton Abbot and Torquay Boys Grammar School; covid precautions will be applied.
Away from the club Tony Tatam and Clifford Peach played for Plymouth in the 4 NCL league against the Bishop Knights from Bishop Auckland with Tony winning and Clifford drawing which saw Plymouth win the match 3-1.
