Torbay Chess League Knockout Competition
Congratulations to the South Hams team on becoming the Knockout champions for the 2023-24 season. In a closely fought final against a strong Plymouth team, the match result was 3-3, so the tie-break on "board coumt" needed to be invoked - with South Hams (winning on boards 1 and 6) coming out on top of Plymouth (winning on boards 4 and 5). Well played everyone.
South Hams Chess Club fields a team in the White Knight Chemicals Cup Knockout competition of the Torbay Chess League. Games played in the TCL are submitted to the ECF rating database.
In this competition, each team consists of six players, with a maximum team rating of Under 10000. The rate of play is 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move (starting from move 1). The away team has white on the odd-numbered boards.

Knockout Draw
The draw for the Knockout Competition was made at the Torbay League Autumn Council Meeting on 27th September 2023. As a result of this draw, South Hams plays Torquay Boys' Grammar School (away) to decide which of these clubs plays Newton Abbot in the Semi-Finals.

Match Report

A great evening at the Regal, with six closely-contested games against Plymouth.
After wins by Steve on Board 1 and Lance on Board 6, and Cathy and Phil drawing on Boards 2 and 3, the score was 3-1 to South Hams, but with ths situation not looking good on the remaining two boards. What would happen if the score ended up 3-3? We couldn't consult Tony Tatam in his role as TCL Comp Sec, as his game on board 5 was still playing. Fortunatley, the Plymouth team had another arbiter in the form of Graham Mill-Wilson, who confirmed that South Hams would win on a tie-break mechanism known as "board count". The way this works, for each team you add up the board numbers on which you win to give a "board count" OIur board count was 1 + 6 = 7, while Plymouth's would be 4 + 5 = 9. The team with the lower board count is the winner. So we were able to celebrate victory (quietly!) while the last two games played on, with Plymouth (as expected) winning both odf them.
A very special mention to Lance Howarth, who beat an opponent ranked 265 rating points above him - a great win without which we would have been defeated.
